What runs in your family

Map everything.
Act where it works.

We write down everything that runs in your family. Then, for each one, we tell you honestly what medicine says you can do before it appears: prevent it, catch it earlier, or build your body's reserve.

What you can do, by condition
ConditionIf it runs in the familyWhat you can do before it appears
Type 2 diabetesPrevent or delay

One diabetic parent brings roughly three times the odds; two parents, about six times. Framingham Offspring, Diabetes 2000

Lifestyle support cut diabetes by 28.5% in Indians with prediabetes. It starts with a fasting glucose and HbA1c test. Indian Diabetes Prevention Programme, 2006

High blood pressure and heart diseasePrevent or delay

A father's heart attack before 55, or a mother's before 65, is a risk flag in heart guidelines. Two parents with high blood pressure, about 2.4 times the risk. ACC/AHA 2019; Arch Intern Med 2008

Regular blood pressure checks, cholesterol and Lp(a) tests, and treating early. India screens every adult over 30 for blood pressure. ICMR; ACC/AHA 2026

Bowel cancerScreen earlier

A parent, brother or sister with bowel cancer raises your risk.

Start checks earlier: from age 40, or 10 years before the age your relative was diagnosed, whichever comes first. Your doctor decides the test. US Multi-Society Task Force, 2017

Breast and ovarian cancerScreen earlier

A family history is a reason for a short risk assessment. USPSTF 2019

If the risk is high, genetic counselling, and for high-risk women, yearly breast scans from around 30. USPSTF 2019; American Cancer Society

Weak bones (osteoporosis)Build reserve

A parent's hip fracture is one of the standard inputs doctors use to estimate fracture risk. FRAX

Weight-bearing and strength exercise, enough calcium and vitamin D, no smoking, less alcohol. NHS

Knee arthritisPrevent or delay

Genes explain a large share of it, 39% to 65% in a twin study. BMJ 1996

Weight matters most. Losing about 5 kg cut the odds of knee arthritis by more than half in women. Ann Intern Med 1992

Rheumatoid arthritisTell your doctor

Some genes that raise the risk run in families. CDC

No proven way to prevent it yet. Not smoking is the main thing you can control. CDC

Bone cancerTell your doctor

Rarely inherited, and under 1% of all cancers. In adults, most cancer in the bones has spread there from somewhere else. American Cancer Society

There is no known way to prevent most bone cancers. Knowing the family history still helps your doctor. American Cancer Society

Families share more than genes. They share kitchens, habits and routines, which is good news: those are the parts you can change. Our first care programme focuses on diabetes, blood pressure and the heart, where acting early is best proven.

Why it matters early

A risk you know about is a risk you can plan around.
